Name
Azar Halabi-Fisher
Azar Halabi Fisher was born and reared in Damascus, Syria. A self taught artist, her paintings are greatly influenced by her childhood. Having lost her father at age one and her mother at age 11, she grew up in a time and place where women did not have big role in society and freedom was an abstract concept. During this tumultuous time in her life, her art became an outlet that would never leave her.
Azar's grandmother, understanding the absence of freedom, taught her to question and to not accept the status quo. Her art has always reached beyond the accepted as a result of this upbringing. Ultimately, possessing a vision for Azar that did not include the oppression of dictators and religion, at age 18 her grandmother pushed her out of the nest and out of Syria to lead a life that would be free. Traveling first to London and then to the US, Azar lived in Portland, Oregon and studied art and social science. She received a degree in these subjects from Portland State University.
All along Azar continually stretched herself and her art to find more and more freedom on the canvas. Working with oils, acrylics, and watercolors she tried many styles and techniques. She has always enjoyed the absence of limitation provided by abstract art and that is, ultimately, how she describes herself, an abstract artist.
As Azar has matured, she has continued to study and, to paint. She has spent time at the Glassell School of Art in Houston studying subjects from drawing to abstract art and she has spent time with varied artists learning and expanding her horizons. She has traveled and painted in France and placed her art for critique with artists there.
Azar Halabi Fisher is an artist that continues to seek the outer boundaries of freedom of _expression. She is never quite satisfied with the last work and seeks to improve in every successive work.
