Barbara Bitar
Houston artist, Barbara Bitar is self-taught in handwrought jewelry that began when she was an AFS exchange student in South America. It was further honed as she traveled around the world absorbing sights and cultures. It is her love of German heritage, Middle Eastern and South American cultural and folkloral influences can have greatly influence her work. What started out as simple beaded items blossomed as she participated in a community development internship in Argentina, Chile and Paraguay, promoting and learnng jewelry design, metal crafting and stone setting from her father and local artisans.
Barbara is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University with a B.S. degree in International Marketing. She has a strong interest in foreign languages, travel, cultures, ethnic folklore, music and art. Her handcrafted jewelry designs utilize sterling silver, brass, copper and sometimes gold. Beads and gemstones, such as lapiz lazuli, malachite, amethyst, carnelian, blue agate, hematite and onyx are incorporated into her beautifully designed works of art. Barbara has designed program pins for Family Shelter Service in Illinois, received the First Place Aware for Jewelry Design at the FLORA'94 Exhibition, and several awards of excellence from the DuPage Art League in Illinois.
