Category Painters  Name Crystal Owens  Education University of Missouri, BS Housing and Interior Design, 1973 Background Crystal worked as a commercial space planner and interior designer for 19 years planning commercial interiors, such as corporate and medical/dental offices, restaurants, and custom furniture. She has studied painting since 1992 with artists Salli Babbitt, Patrick Palmer, Ruth Munson, William Kalwick, Jr., Joe Anna Arnett, Ann Templeton and Karen Garrett. Artist Statement Texture/Collector Series: I create tension by breaking the surface of the canvas with tactile texture that evokes remembrances of feelings, times, places, and things the viewer has experienced, seen, and touched. The texture engages the viewer with the canvas, which comes alive with movement. Each texture is developed with layers of emulsions, mediums, and found and collected objects and then painted with luminous colors. In other pieces I create visual texture by applying several layers of oil paint and then sanding down to discover what is beneath. In this way the surface is very smooth and the texture is created visually by exposing the colors and values underneath. Figurative Abstract: My figurative abstract paintings express luminosity of color and of light, evoking feelings of suspended time and place. Totem Series: These works of colorful stacks of faces floating, suspended in liquid fields of greens and blues, bring to mind tribal totems.
